Arden University is a growing organisation delivering online only and blended study options to students studying towards undergraduate degrees, master’s and MBA programmes. We have study centres in numerous locations across the UK, as well as a centre in Berlin, and a head office based in Coventry.
Based within our Library Service, Academic Skills Tutors (ASTs) are specialists who support students on all programmes and across all levels in the development of good academic skills. Their role is key to helping our students to build their confidence and succeed on their programme of study.
This is a freelance/blended learning role with some in centre teaching and some remote work
This role will require you to work in one of Arden’s Blended Learning Centres in Birmingham, Leeds, London or Manchester as well as working remotely. The Associate Lecturer (Academic Skills) will play a key role in assisting our Academic Skills Tutors (ASTs) in the delivery of Academic Skills support to students across the University.
You will be involved in supporting the delivery of a curriculum of Academic Skills support for the Cert HE (a 1-year level 4 programme with five subject pathways: Business Management, Computing, Health and Care Management, Law and Psychology). You will also be involved in supporting the delivery of embedded bespoke academic skills sessions for students studying on the programmes across Arden’s portfolio. In addition, the Associate Lecturer (AL) will be involved in the duties outlined below:
Conduct seminar style sessions, manage discussion forums, and provide 1-2-1 academic skills support for our students on demand. You will also carry out administrative duties e.g., email support and all associated activities-for example, preparation and planning for sessions and help with the adaptation of appropriate resources and online module content.
In doing the above, uphold the highest levels of academic and professional standards in all areas of work with students and colleagues at the University, and building positive relationships. Support high levels of student outcomes and satisfaction and contribute to the ongoing currency and development of academic programmes.
You will have experience in supporting students in the understanding and application of a broad range of academic skills including referencing, academic writing, academic integrity (and avoiding academic malpractice), using the Library, note-taking, active listening, developing “good study habits”, contributing to discussions, reflection, time management, appropriate “netiquette”), preparing for examinations and planning assessments.
You will be an academic and must have proven experience of supporting students to develop good academic skills, along with experience of supporting students in one of the subject areas in Arden’s portfolio. You will need excellent digital literacy skills and a clear passion to engender these in our students, as well as possessing understanding, empathy and a kind nature with the ability to support our diverse population of students.
You should be self-motivated, positive, ambitious and organised with a genuine enthusiasm and commitment to the delivery of blended and online learning.

You will be required to support two 90-minute seminar style sessions for each Cert HE group up to a maximum of three groups using a teach test and teach method.
You will support students asynchronously between sessions via online forums with the second session focussing on feedback, checking understanding and reflecting on what has been learned.
In addition, you will deliver a maximum of 5 1-hour embedded teaching sessions. Your role will also involve providing 1-1 support which students may book in advance.
